The countdown is on for Spring Break! Students have been busy wrapping up projects and units before their week off. In Language Arts, students have now finished writing their Important Books. We are also reading a class novel called A Boy Called BAT. In Math, grade 3 have finished their unit on measurement and perimetre. This week we are having some fun with mental math, and learning thinking strategies that can help us with math in the real world. Science ended in a frustrating fashion. I had purchased a building kit to create cars. Unfortunately, the materials were very flimsy, and as hard as we tried to problem solve, most of our cars ended up breaking apart when we tried to make them move. It did teach us a lesson in patience and the importance of strong materials when building! Our most recent Social Studies unit is wrapping up as well. Today, students completed a writing assessment where they answered our "Big Question" for the unit in paragraph form. Now, we are creat...

March 9, 2021

This week in Language Arts students have started a new writing task. They are creating their own "Important Book" centered around the theme of nature. As a class, our current learning target is to write with proper sentence structure. Many students are starting sentences with "and" or "so" which is a habit we need to get out of!  In Math, grade three have been applying their knowledge of measurement to the concept of perimeter. In Science, students continue to work on our combined units around testing materials and design and building devices that move. Today, they were challenged to think of how they could design a simple vehicle that would move by itself. It proved to be quite the challenge for many kids! Some great ideas they came up with were balloons and fans to use air to move the car, or winding an elastic around the axles. Stay tuned to hear about the fun cars they will be building next week! This week in Social Studies students are diving deeper i...

March is National Nutrition Month

Students have been celebrating National Nutrition Month with Eat the Rainbow in our classroom. It is great to see the kids enjoying fruits and vegetables as part of a nutritious lunch and snack. Another way to help kids develop healthy habits is to involve them in the kitchen. Below is a link to one of my favourite websites. It is packed with resources and recipes that your kids will love. Over the weekend, invite your child into the kitchen and spend some quality time cooking together! :) Mrs. Rowein https://www.superhealthykids.com/

This week in Language Arts, we are continuing our focus on punctuation. The punctuation the students have learned and will be practicing are periods, exclamation marks, question marks, commas, and quotation marks. Some students do require additional practice at home on how to make lowercase letters.  In Math, grade three is measuring with metres! They have also been practicing estimation skills, and converting metres to centimetres.  Yesterday in Science, students tested their bridge designs. Then, they reflected on how they could improve their design if they were to do this again. Most students recognized that they needed to add more tension and compression to support the span of their bridge. We will continue to work on building and designing structures, including structures that move!  Today in Social Studies we are starting a new unit on early immigration. Students will be learning about how settlers came from Europe over 100 years ago and settled in the West. March i...

Baby Rowein is Coming in May

As many of you know by now, I am expecting a baby in May. This means I will be taking a maternity leave, and not returning before the end of the school year. I anticipate going on leave near the beginning of May but do not have a set date decided yet. I also do not know who will be covering for my absence.  I understand there are many questions, and I will do my best to keep families posted as the due date approaches! :) Mrs. Rowein
