This morning students were treated to one of my favourite holiday traditions...hot chocolate and gift opening around the "fireplace!"  Students wrapped up their Social Studies and completed their scrapbooks for their Road rip Across Alberta assignment. I can't wait to read about all of their adventures across the different regions of Alberta! In Math, grade three have completed a review of all the concepts we covered so far this year. I was really impressed how much knowledge they have retained, and how their math skills are improving.  In Phys. Ed we have finished our 5 Days of Fitness. All students learned lots of body weight exercises that they can do any time they want a good workout at home. Today students were sent home with their online learning package for the week of January 4-8. It includes: -important letter and daily schedule -novel to be studied during Language Arts on January 4-8 -green card with login information -Math package Grade threes also are taking ...

I can't believe this is our last week of school before the holidays! Today grade three finished up their mini unit on shapes. We will continue to revisit shapes in our units on measurement and 3D shapes later in the year. Tomorrow and Wednesday we will be doing a big review of all the concepts we have covered since September! In Language Arts, we have been continuing short stories. Students have been reviewing the concepts of setting and character. They are stretching their thinking to analyze how good authors connect characters and setting in subtle ways.  We have one more experiment to do in our Light and Shadow unit! I am proud to say I have seen students independence grow since taking on this inquiry unit. This week we will be wrapping up our Alberta Road Trip assignment. Students will have their last day of class to work on their scrapbooks Wednesday. They must be completed and handed in by Thursday. Reminder: The government of Alberta has mandated that January 4-8 learn...

Laptops for Online Learning

As you know, elementary students will be online learning from January 4-8. You will be receiving an email from me with all the details about online learning once expectations have been communicated from CBE.  If your child will need a computer for online learning, please email me as soon as possible and let me know. pamielke@cbe.ab.ca

Today in Language Arts, we listened to the legend The Drum Calls Softly. Students were challenged to think beyond the text about the important messages in the story. In Math, grade three have stared their shape and space unit. So far, they have learned about sides and vertices, and specific names for polygons. In Science, students are working on their second experiment in our light and shadow unit. Today they planned a procedure and came up with a hypothesis. Tomorrow they will be testing their experiment. Students have been busy working on their Social Studies scrapbooks. Unfortunately, not everyone has accomplished as much as we had hoped and therefore are taking it home for homework. If your child has brought home Social Studies homework, they are to finish their journal entries for the Foothills Region. They have a "Scrapbook Planner" in their red duotang with their ideas. Everyone has already started the rough draft of their journal entries in their writing notebook. St...

December 3, 2020

Can you believe it is already December?! How time flies. Grade 3's have finished up their giving project for the Mustard Seed. I will be taking their shopping lists with me to the store and picking up items to donate to the Mustard Seed on their behalf. Today, students conducted their first of three independent experiments in our new Science unit. The big question was, "How do our shadows change throughout the day?" Have your child tell you what they learned! Now the tough part is figuring out why our shadows change the way they do depending on the time of day. In Language Arts, we read the book Storm Boy, which is an Indigenous legend from the people of the Pacific Northwest. We discussed how totem poles are important to West Coast Indigenous culture, and learned about the different animals people use to represent their families. Students then made their own totem poles. Have your child explain to you why they chose the animals they did for their totem pole. If you wer...

Tonight's Homework

Today, students will be bringing home a rainbow crow that they made after listening to a Cree legend. Have your child retell the legend to you!
